Reverend Donald Reed. (BA, BDiv, MT) Peacefully, surrounded by family, in Stratford, Ontario on October 25, 2019. Born in Yorkshire, England on July 27, 1921. He was the only child of Ida (Butterfield) and Laurence Reed, who died before Donald was born, but grew up in a large extended family. Although circumstances required him to leave school at 16, an appreciation of Shakespeare, poetry and music was fostered, which endured all his life. After serving with the British 8th Army during WWII, he had the opportunity to return to school and studied at Edinburgh University where he met his wife, Esther, and then studied theology at Bradford University. Served as minister of the Congregational Church in Driffield and in Birmingham. Emigrating to Canada in 1966 with his young family, his first pastoral charge with the United Church of Canada was in Neville, Saskatchewan. Moving to a tiny prairie town from a large urban centre was certainly a major adjustment, but the family experienced memorable summer camping trips, travelling to Expo ’67 and seeing Canada from coast to coast. In 1968 the family moved to Ontario where he served a number of congregations before he and Esther retired to Brighton, Ontario. There they enjoyed gardening, trips to Toronto for the symphony and ballet, theatre trips to Stratford and Niagara-on-the-lake, overseas travel and further travel across Canada. Predeceased by Esther in 2014, he leaves his children Andrew (Susan), Philip, Rosamund , Alison; his grandchildren Carolyn (William), Rachel (Chris), Matthew, Grace and his great-grandchildren Luca and Matteo, who all knew him as Poppa. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Out of respect for Donald's wishes there shall be no formal public visitation or service. A private family service will be held in his honour. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
