Esther Wellington Obituary

Esther Sigrun Wellington passed away Saturday, December 28, 2019 after a brief illness, surrounded by family and the wonderful staff of Greenwood Court. The daughter of Ole Alfred Gudjonson and Pearl Ingibjorg Bardal, she was born November 24, 1925, within Section 22, Township 32, Range 16, West of the Second Meridian on a farm just outside Wynyard, Saskatchewan. Sister to Phyllis (Johnny Lazarenko), Franklin (Vera Turnbull), Shirley (Stan Forkin), Marilyn (Ray Shillington), and Armand (Janick Bouchardeau). Wife for 55 years to George Gardner Wellington; mother to John Franklin, Eric George, and Stephen Haldane; mother-in-law to Paddy Donovan, Lynn Schellenberg, and Natalie Pressburger; grandmother to William, Jacob, and Toby. She was an aunt to Diane, Clint, Mitchell, Kim, Joel, Terry, Doug, Jeff, David, Erika, and Frankie. She attended Nordra Public School, Wynyard High, and, with the help of then young school teacher Margaret Mahood, she went to the University of Saskatchewan where she would study English literature and meet her future husband. Esther wrote poetry and painted landscapes. She was an avid reader and was seldom seen without a book in her hand. And she cooked wonderful meals, both simple and gourmet. Esther set an example to all who knew her of how to lead a kind and compassionate life. She was a good listener and gave the most insightful advice. A celebration of Esther's life will be held later in the spring at a time and place to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations in Esther’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice directly or by calling Rutherford Cremation & Funeral Services at 519-271-5062. Esther's Last Poem: It began with prairie dawn Pink sky, long shadows east to west. Bare feet followed uphill And at hard clear noon came to rest. Now neatly shod Walk crowded line of cobalt days Tapering down to mist From blue to amethyst. Suddenly orthopedic shoes Press on the pedal Hands on the wheel Steer into dark Over pot-holes and rock Into dense fog.
