Obituary
James(Jim) Caldwell Corkery (P. Eng, B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc. UofT) – b. East Orange NJ, 23 Jun 1925; d. 23 Aug 2012; Former Deputy Postmaster General and former Master of the Mint passed away at his home in Stratford, ON. He is survived by his wife and childhood best friend Jane (nee Woodruff) and children Kirk of Richmond Hill and Candace Corkery (Mitch Plant) of Penetanguishene and grandchildren Braeden Corkery, Garrett Corkery, Morgan Corkery, Shelby Plant, James Connor Plant and Samuel Plant. Jim was the last Deputy Postmaster General before Canada Post became a Crown Corporation and was responsible for its creation. As Master of the Mint he was instrumental in the creation of both the ‘Loonie’ and of the world famous Canadian gold coin program. He was also the first Canadian Director of the Gold Institute in Washington, DC. During World War II he served in both the RCAF and in the army. In his early career he worked for General Electric in various locations including Peterborough, Toronto, Oakville and Montreal. Jim believed very strongly in giving back to his community. He has been an active member of Rotary International for over five decades serving in clubs in Oakville, Ottawa and Stratford in various roles including Club President. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He is a past Chair of the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in Oakville (since renamed) and he was a Board Member of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He chaired the Easter Seals campaign in Ottawa in the mid ‘80’s. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 28, 7-9 p.m. at Heinbuck Funeral Home, 156 Albert, Stratford. Memorial Service at St. James Church, Stratford, Wednesday , August 29, 11a.m. Donations may be made through the funeral home, to the Stratford Rotary Club Charitable Foundation or St. James Church.
