Penny April Wong Sing, 78, passed away at home in Stratford, ON, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday September 6th, 2017. She valiantly fought the complications of 2 strokes over the last few years with tremendous strength and perseverance. Born in Chinatown in Vancouver, BC, she graduated from University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education in 1965. As a third year student, she was named Phrateres Queen in 1961, and was a member of the UBC yearbook (Totem), Chinese Varsity Club, and the ten-pin bowling team. She taught in the Vancouver and Toronto school systems as an elementary school educator. As she was raising her family, she continued to pursue her passion for education particularly in the area of Asian heritage. She was very active with many organizations such as the Pacific Asian Coalition, Asian American Heritage Festivals, Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), and was a contributing writer for the Chinatown News. She was recognized for her contributions to the community and was invited to be a member of the Ethnic Advisory Council for the State of New Jersey under Governor Thomas Kean. Along with her friend and collaborator, the Honorable Sue Pai Yang, they did much to raise awareness about Chinese and Asian culture and conducted many workshops to support consciousness around these topics. She was also an incredible sewer, craftswoman, and cook. As a young woman she sewed many of her own clothes and then later for her children as well. She started a small business called Penny’s Potpourri, creating beautiful crafts such as stuffed animals, quilted pillows, Colonial Christmas trees, holiday decorations, origami ornaments, and gingerbread houses. She also shared her love of crafting and cooking by teaching many after school and continuing education classes. Penny continued her career and became an Administrator and Membership Coordinator of The Intercollegiate Tennis Association in Princeton, New Jersey for almost 3 decades. She loved to travel and took every chance she could to see the world. She took many trips across the US and Canada to visit family. Some of her memorable international travels took her to China to see the Sing family village, Australia, Bermuda, England, France, Italy, Jamaica, and Spain. She loved traveling to see her daughter, Lynda, in her performing career as a dancer and attended many of her performances around the United States, Canada and the world. A woman of many interests, she was a lifelong lover of tennis and was a member of the USTA, Princeton Indoor Tennis Club, and Mercer County Tennis League. She loved origami was a member of Origami USA for many years and taught many classes locally. An avid lover of the arts she was a volunteer usher at the Princeton McCarter and Berlind Theaters and attended many dance, Jazz, and theater performances in the local area, New York City & Philadelphia. She also enjoyed bowling, ice skating, skiing, ballroom dancing, and bridge. Dear mother of Michael Sing of Stratford and Lynda Sing (Eric Robertson) of New York. Loving sister of May Soo (d. Frank), George Wong, Dorothy Lee & her husband David, Ray Wong & wife Joy, sister-in-law Trixie Wong, wife of Joe, and Sieu Lan Wong, wife of Edmund. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Paul, parents King and Shee Wong, brothers Joe, Kang, Ken, Edmund and sisters, Moy & her husband Yew Lee, Ping & her husband Keith, Burma, and Clara.
