Richard Wray, age 90, of 82 Queen Street, Stratford passed away peacefully at Hillside Manor on October 19, 2015. Born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Townsley) Wray. After immigrating from Ireland the family settled in Listowel, Ontario; where he developed a life-long love of sports. In Stratford he began his hockey career then advanced to playing professionally primarily in the Quebec Hockey League, for Victoriaville, Chicoutimi, Montreal and Shawinigan. He was a goal scorer; for many years he led the league. He retired from his hockey career in 1960 and joined Prudential Insurance Company where he worked for 31 years. He was a member of St. John’s United Church, Stratford. Beloved husband of June (Butson) Wray, whom he married at St. John’s United Church on June 28, 1947. Dear father of Bryan Wray and wife Tamara Walsh of Etobicoke and Beverly Wray-Green and husband Gregory Green of Nairn. Loving grandfather of Connor Liam Green. Dear brother of Bert Wray and wife Helen of Durham. Dick is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers William and James Wray and sisters Wilma Watson and Elizabeth West. Relatives and friends may call at the James A. Rutherford Funeral Home, 156 Albert Street, Stratford on Thursday, October 22 from 11 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12 p.m.. Rev. Kathi Urbasik-Hindley will officiate. Entombment of his cremated remains will be in the Columbarium Wall at Avondale Cemetery, Stratford, following the service.
