Son of the late William and Mary Somers of Cartier, beloved husband of Evelyn Burns Somers (née Tremblay), and the late Marion Stevens Somers (née McKee), he will be deeply missed by his step-children Lise Bilec (Michael) of Lakeshore, Gail Bittolo (Dennis) of Thunder Bay, Betty-Lou Tulk (Fred) of Sudbury, Debbie Bailey (Dave) of Elliott Lake, and Gary Stevens (Christine) of Biscotasing. Grant was a WWII veteran of the Canadian Army’s landing in Italy and the liberation of Holland. He was employed for 47 years by the C.P.R. and VIA Rail and was very well known and loved along the railway line. Grant was a former Past Master of the Lorne Lodge, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Chapleau and a long-time member of the Sudbury YMCA. As well, Grant was a lifetime supporter of various wildlife organizations and believed in treating all life forms with respect and dignity. He was an avid outdoorsman and welcomed many friends and family into his home in Cartier. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff on the 4th floor in the South and North towers at the Laurentian site, the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre, as well as Grant’s doctors for the compassionate care that they gave him.
