Joseph Opala
In Loving Memory of Joseph (Joe) Opala 89 years Passed away suddenly Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 Survived by his wife Joanne (nee Eagle), daughter of Keitta (Bill), and son Kenny. Also survived by his nieces and nephews in Poland, France and Massachusetts. A man who had a beautiful spirit for life and great perseverance. He was a polish scout in Poland in his youth, going into World War II, becoming a prisoner of war, then having the opportunity for a new life in Canada. He arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax in April 1948. Working for CN railway upon his arrival, and eventually arriving in his permanent home of Virginatown, Ontario, where he worked for Ken Addison gold mine, in the mill for 42 years. Dad worked by day and took night classes to learn english and Canadian history. Later in his spirit for learning he went to high school to get his mechanics and electrical certificate. He was very talented with woodworking and made many pieces of furniture, toys, and home improvements. He loved his homeland of Poland but at the same time was a very proud Canadian. From the start of his new life in Virginiatown he and many others, helped build many of the buildings in town. He married a pretty, young bank teller in Virginatown in 1964, then had twins and started another phase in life. Dad was a very devoted, patient man, going through the joys and difficulties of life. In retirement he did a lot of reading, his favourites being history, geography and astronomy. He was an active member of the XYZ seniors club in Virginatown, and loved going to the legion suppers with Joanne. After 63 years in Virginiatown he and Joanne moved to Sudbury to start yet another path in his very interesting and inspired life, and to be close to his family. Sadly after 2 days on his new path he was taken away to his final destination. Joe Opala, inspirational, devoted, patient and kind with a strong sense of spirit.
