Sylvia Luyten Sudbury, Ontario Obituary

Sylvia Luyten

Sylvia Rose Luyten (née Hortness) died peacefully at the Elizabeth Centre in Sudbury on September 22nd, 2017. She was very much looking forward to celebrating her 90th birthday on Saturday with her family. Instead, we will be celebrating her life, which focused on doing the best she could for each of us. Sylvia is survived by her three daughters: Karen Miner (John) of Bolton, Judy Dussiaume (Jack Martin) of Sudbury, Janice Miner (Mark) of Newmarket; eight grandchildren: Laurie Henry (James), Andrew Miner, Ryan Dussiaume (Patty), David Dussiaume (Taylor), Robyn Dussiaume, Kelly Dussiaume, Merrilees Miner, Matthew Miner; and 5 great grandchildren: Carter, Addison, Evan, Charlotte, Thomas. Sylvia's mother gave birth to 10 boys followed by a girl, another boy and then Sylvia. Sylvia was the last child, predeceased by all siblings but one brother (Happy Hortness of Redvers, Saskatchewan). The girls of the family were gold and silver to their mother and appropriately named Goldie and Sylvia. Their father, instead of saying he had 13 children, would claim to have 7 and one-half dozen. Sylvia was born on September 30, 1927 in Alida, Saskatchewan to Karen and Lewis Hortness (predeceased). Sylvia traveled to Sudbury for employment when she was 16 but returned home to help on the homestead. Back in Saskatchewan she met Andrew Luyten (predeceased 1975). She married Andy in 1947 and they moved to Sudbury where Andy began working for INCO. Sylvia was a committed volunteer especially to her church. Until a stroke in 2011, she enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, gardening, and spending time with her family. Special thanks to the Elizabeth Centre for their care of Mom during her stay. A Private Family Funeral Service was held at St. Stephen’s on the Hill United Church in Sudbury on Monday, September 25th, 2017 followed by interment in the Park Lawn Cemetery next to her husband Andrew.
