Mr. Benoit "Ben" Daoust Thunder Bay, Ontario Obituary

Mr. Benoit "Ben" Daoust

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the family of Benoit Adrian Daoust (Ben) announce his passing on Friday, September 30, 2016 in St. Joseph's Hospice, with his family by his side. Ben was born on May 2, 1927 in the town of Espanola and moved to Thunder Bay at the age of 12. At the age of 17, he began working at the Abitibi Mission Mill and worked there for 44 years, retiring in 1988. One of Ben's greatest loves was his camp at Lake Shebandowan, which he cleared the land and built and he called it “Paradise.” Over the 47 years spent at the lake, he created wonderful memories hosting many parties with his wife Bea for family and friends. Because of his love for music, you could find Ben playing the piano or listening to music on his old 8 track player, that he had in his shed at camp. He was an avid bowler in the Abitibi Bowling League for many years. Ben would walk for miles and even during the last 6 years of battling various medical issues, he would still be seen walking all around the Westfort area of town with a smile for anyone he met. He also enjoyed watching his great-grandsons play hockey and baseball and was always interested in how they were doing. Ben was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra; sisters Alice, Yvonne, Jean and Marion; brothers Leonard, Nap, Tim, Roland and Aimee as well as his parents Leonard and Exilda. Ben will be lovingly missed by his wife of 68 years, Beatrice; daughter Cathy (Joe) and son Leonard; granddaughter Chantal (Sean) and grandson Kris as well as great-grandsons Jordan, Turner and Cale, who will miss their Papa Ben. He is also survived by his sisters Juliette and Pauline and his brothers Paul, Julian and Frankie. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors on the 1A Unit at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for their kindness and support. A special thank you to the medical staff at St. Joseph's Hospice for helping us get through our difficult days and for the care and kindness you gave to Ben during his last days. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service to be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 1:00pm at St. Patrick's Mountain View Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall on May Street between 1:30pm and 4:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Joseph's Care Group or a charity of your choosing. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street.
