Mrs. Mary Owen Obituary

MARY OWEN February 7, 1917 – October 15, 2016 Mary Zdan was born in Badger, Manitoba and moved to Carrick, Manitoba, where she went to school. After finishing school, she worked in town but returned to Carrick and married John Owen on Nov. 16th, 1935. They worked a homestead farm, where their only child, Jack, was born on September 23rd, 1936. In 1940, John started a career in mining, taking them from Bissett, Manitoba to Geraldton, Ontario. In Geraldton, Mary got her trade as a butcher meat cutter. From 1949 to 1952, John ran a coal dock at Niddrie, Ontario before they moved to Atikokan. John returned to mining and Mary started at the meat counter, where she ran the meat department at Chapples and the Hudson Bay Store. No matter how much a customer would provoke her, Mary never weighed her thumb (if you are a butcher, you know what that means). Mary loved people and she knew people would respond to that a lot better than being hard to get along with. In the mid seventies, Mary and John retired and moved to their cottage at Reef Point and from there, to Rosslyn Road to be near their family. Mary was known for her wit and fast answers. Even when memory loss set in, she still came up with a fast answer. When Mary moved into her first old folks home, I asked her what it was called and she responded with, “Worst of Care.” We both laughed. Mary then moved into Pinewood Court, where she had the best of care, given by the nicest people anywhere. Mary was predeceased by her parents; her husband John; sisters and brothers-in-law Olga & John, Sally & Rudy, Wassy & Eddie, Ann & Wilson and brother-in-law Harry. She is survived by her sister, Emma; son Jack & Thelma; grandchildren John, Robert, Thomas and Colleen; great-grandchildren Jimmy & Salena, Jesse, Madisyn, Thomas & Nathan and Evan as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary had her house in order and her peace with God, with nothing left to do but take her last breath at 1:55pm on October 15, 2016. A private family service was held in the Westfort Chapel. Interment followed in Mountainview Cemetery. Pallbearers were John, Jimmy, Tom, Thomas, Jesse and Evan.
