Mrs. Teresa "Terry" Heward Obituary

After a courageous battle, it is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Teresa (Terry) Maria Heward, age 66 years, on April 1, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Terry was born in Germany on November 8, 1949. At a young age, along with her older brother Edward, her parents Bruno and Mary Karusewicz moved to Canada. Planting roots in Thunder Bay, her family thrived, grew and prospered, adding two brothers - Richard and Henry. In her youth, Terry was a tomboy. She would spend a lot of time tagging along with her older brother Eddy. Their parents instilled in them a sense of working hard and taking responsibility. She was a mysterious youth with many of her family questioning the tales she would tell about her younger days. The friends Terry made were life long. Terry always retained a sense of privacy, never wanting to bother others with her problems. She enjoyed gardening, dogs and most of all her family. She adored and was adored by her grandson Harrison, spoiling him with gifts and treats whenever she could. She had various careers, but found her love driving school bus for Iron Range, a career spanning over 20 years. Her kindness, love and interaction with children was on a level that showed her true inner child. Terry loved her pets. She was a strong supporter of the Animal Services Centre and Friends of the Animals. She was a member and volunteer of the Lakehead Kennel Club. She was also a member of the Thunder Bay Kennel & Training Club, where she partook in many of their Rally trials, titling many of her Shelties with prestigious RAE titles. She also supported CARO Rally Obedience. Terry was an active participant of agility at CDC during the winter months and during the summer each year she ran her shelties with the TBAD organization. Many of her Shelties ran CKC & NADAC Agility and she achieved many titles for her dogs each summer in Agility at the Chippewa TBAD trials. Terry is survived by her daughter Chandra, of Qualicum Beach, British Columbia; son Stephen (Adrienne) and grandson Harrison; brothers Henry (Barb) Karusewicz of Edmonton and Rick (Margaret) Karusewicz; sister-in-law Diana (Bill) French and brother-in-law Rick (Jean) Heward of Mississauga. Numerous nieces, nephews and other family also survive. She was predeceased by her parents Bruno and Mary Karusewicz, husband Charles (2013), and brother Edward. A Celebration of Terry's Life will be held on Thursday, April 7th, 2016 with an informal gathering of family and friends from 11:30am until 2:00pm at the DaVinci Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Terry to the New Hope Dog Rescue, Kitty Kare, the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. At this time the family would like to thank her close friends, especially Bonnie, for always checking in on her. They would also like to express sincere thanks as well to Dr. Anthes, Dr. Davis and all the nurses and staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for the compassionate care they gave to Terry and her family members. Most of all, they would like to thank the nurses at St. Joseph’s Care Group for providing much deserved comfort to her in her final days. Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
