Mr. Gunter Hinrich Renken Thunder Bay, Ontario Obituary

Mr. Gunter Hinrich Renken

Gunter Hinrich Renken 1930-2017 Mr. Gunter Hinrich Renken passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay on November 17, 2017. Born to Hinrich and Betty Renken in Bremen, Germany, Gunter arrived in Thunder Bay in 1951 and trained as a lumberjack while working in the bush camps. It was there he met Irene Renken (Metz). They were happily married for 46 years and raised two sons. A hardworking handyman, Gunter also worked at the Abitibi Provincial Paper Mill. He was fortunate to have had many dear friends in Thunder Bay. He was an active member of the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association and the Canadian German Association. In his later years, he spent many days at the family cottage on Lacs des Milles Lacs and visiting his family in southwestern Ontario. His family aside, coffee and pastries were among Gunter’s true passions as well as a love for dogs. He will always be remembered for his ability to strike up a friendly conversation with anyone and, of course, his sweet tooth. Gunter was predeceased by his wife Irene and sister Waltraut (Germany). He is survived by sisters Erdmute and Irmtrud (Germany), his sons Brian (Barbara) Meaford, Lloyd (Suzanne) Tillsonburg, grandchildren Andrew (Renee), Kayla (Andrew Severs), Brittany Van Den Brink (Adam), Tessa, and Taylor, as well as great grandchildren Chloe and Cedric (Renken) and Lucas Van Den Brink. Pursuant to Gunter’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a private family celebration of life at a later date. If friends so desire, donations can be made to the Northern Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Miller, Dr. Silvaggio, and Dr. Woods as well as the entire Palliative Care Team on 2C at TBRHSC for their compassionate care of Gunter. A very special thanks to the wonderful nursing staff and his social worker Carole. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
