Mrs. Anna Iwasykiw Thunder Bay, Ontario Obituary

Mrs. Anna Iwasykiw

Anna Iwasykiw It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our dear mother and baba, Anna, at her residence in Bethammi Nursing Home on March 1st, 2019 with her daughter by her side. Anna was born on October 17, 1923 in Vybudiv, Berezhany Area, Ukraine. In her twenties, she was sent to Germany to work as a farm labourer. When the war was over, Anna travelled across the ocean and arrived in Nova Scotia at Pier 21. She worked in a sanitorium for two years in Kentville before coming to the fair city of Fort William, where she eventually met her future husband, Leo. Anna was a very talented singer and performed in several theatrical productions as part of a Ukrainian Acting Troupe. She also sang in the choir at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Ascension and practised her religion devoutly her entire life. Mom was also a member of the Westfort Prosvita Society and the Ukrainian Hall on Robertson Street. She was a very social person and loved to go out dancing. Anna was a hard worker who loved her home and children. She took great pride in her garden and in keeping things neat and orderly. She worked as a housekeeper for Beacon Hill Lodge for eighteen years, and upon retiring, focussed her energy on her gardening and on making perogies every week at Star Hall. Her indomitable spirit and strength of will were very apparent when her first leg was amputated in 2003. From 2004 to 2015, our mother demonstrated her great resilience and strength as she lived independently in her own home for twelve years. Unfortunately, in 2015, her remaining leg had to be amputated and Anna made the difficult decision to move to her new home at Bethammi. The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Bethammi for their wonderful care of our mother and the comfort you so readily gave. Left to mourn Anna’s passing are her daughter Lada (Barry), son George (Eileen), and cherished granddaughter, Alanna (mom was so very proud of Alanna). She is also survived by two nephews in England, her half sister and numerous other relatives still residing in Ukraine. Predeceased by her parents, Maria and Dmitro (Burbela), brother Wolodomyr and husband Leo. Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Anna Iwasykiw will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 1:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, celebrated by Father Francisco Blazek. Interment will take place in the Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening after 6:00pm in the Chapel with Panachyda (Prayers) offered at 8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be much appreciated. Vichnaya Pamyat We Will Never Forget You
