LUISE CHRISTINE SULKKO June 27, 1933 – May 14, 2018 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Luise (Lucy) Sulkko, age 84 years, peacefully at home on Monday, May 14, 2018, with her family and hound dog within close proximity. What can we say about Lucy? She was a survivor. She survived: - occupied Holland as a child - a horrific car accident in 1958, when cars were heavy and solid - numerous back surgeries and a pair of hip replacements - Lung Cancer and the removal of one lung - Kidney Cancer and the removal of one kidney - the swallowing of a pea that landed in her lung - a brain tumour, the necessary brain surgery, and the subsequent infection in her brain which involved 2 more surgeries - a massive heart attack on route to the hospital All, not to be outshone by surviving 26 years living in Atikokan. Lucy's amazing life began in Amsterdam in 1933, spending her formative years in Arnhem following the war. Having some family connections in Fort William, Lucy and her good friend Suutu quit their jobs and hopped an ocean-liner to Canada in 1954. They landed jobs at the Thunder Bay Golf & Country Club, where free lodging was part of the wage package. Soon after their arrival, she met an intriguing Harley Davidson riding Finlander, Ray Sulkko, and then she knew that Canada was to be her home. Lucy and Ray got married in 1957, and only true love would explain why she agreed to move to Moose Lake, as it was a bush camp consisting of nothing more than 8 houses. Ray had a job at the Ontario Hydro Transformer Station there but in 1961, following the birth of their first child, it was time to move out of the bush. The family relocated to the grand metropolis of Atikokan, where they had two more children. Lucy had a good time reflecting and sharing many of the Atikokan memories, including the wonderful times spent at Olga & Gerry's cabin, making perogies with Gayle, sipping beer at Nym Lake with Kay and pondering life with Aunty Bea in her veranda, to name a few. In 1986, the year after Ray died, Lucy moved to Thunder Bay where she carved out a new life for herself. She went to work for the VON, joined painting classes, got involved in the 55 Plus Club and socialized with friends, old and new. She was especially proud of the Golden Ticket that she received from The Cambrian Players for her years of volunteering. Lucy always looked forward to Church on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. She found profound comfort in her church family. Lucy, extremely well read, will forever be remembered for her efforts that she put into gift giving, her laughter, and of course, her unfiltered tongue. Her door was always open complete with food, drink, clean sheets, genuine friendship and at times, unbridled advice. She is survived by her daughter Tanja and son Rob (Anita); granddaughter Robyn and buddy Houndi, the hound dog. Lucy was predeceased by her husband Ray (1985), and her brother Jake Van Nus (1987). Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Luise Sullko will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00am in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James. Visitation and viewing for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time. A reception will follow the service at the Airlane Hotel in the Tiberio Room. Should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Gitchigomee, the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
