Obituary

After a brief illness, Kenneth (Ken) Charles Trevenna of Timmins, Ontario died peacefully on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at the age of 91. Born on May 28, 1929 in Toronto, Ontario, to Charles Trevenna, a recent immigrant from Cornwall, England, and Emma Cooper Trevenna, of Toronto, Ken’s family moved to Timmins when he was a small child. Young Ken excelled at sports, but particularly hockey and baseball. Upon graduating from Timmins High and Vocational School where he played on the Senior Football Team, he was offered a chance to join a professional hockey team located in Edinburgh, Scotland, but, in deference to his parents’ wishes, chose to remain in Timmins and follow in his father’s footsteps at the Hollinger Mine. This did not put a stop to his athletic career, however, and for many years “Speedy Little,” as he was known, was a valued and, indeed, a storied forward on the Hollmac, Columbines, Hollinger Greenshirt, and Timmins-Schumacher Flyer Hockey teams as well as various baseball and softball teams, including the Legion Ball Club, the Hollinger softball team, and the Plant Softball League; after he hung up his own skates, he went on to coach the Legion 88’s, Timmins Moose and McChesney Lumber Kings. Ken’s career as a millwright and electrician spanned four decades and included stints at the Hollinger Mine and the Kidd Creek Mine. In 1983 a fall down a mine shaft resulted in injuries – a ruptured spleen, several broken ribs and banged up knees -- that led to his early retirement. Never one to be idle, Ken joined the Moneta Rec Club as an original member in 1952 and spent the next several decades as a volunteer, giving generously of his time to the Canadian Legion (he was a lifetime member beginning in 1972) as well as the Canadian Red Cross. Thanks to Ken, hundreds of area children whispered their wish lists into Santa’s ear; in addition to being a beloved scout leader for many years, he made Father Christmas a reality for an entire generation of Timmins children. Ken is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Delores Fauteux Trevenna, sons Kenneth Jr. and Timothy and daughters Terryl and Laura, their partners Melissa, Jackie, Terry and Tom, as well as grandchildren Shanah, Raina, Sabrina, Will, Alice, Kenneth, Kevin, Jessie, Jordan, Lindsey, Justin, Tyler, Emma and great-grandchildren Xander, Victoria, Audrey, Iris, Brooklyn, Enzo, Marek, Eliza, Evelyn, Charlotte, Judith, Mirabel, Paige, Nora and the newest arrival, born on June 28, 2020, Marvel. He is predeceased by his father, Charles, his mother, Emma, and his brothers Douglas, Robert and Charles, as well as his sister Gloria. A private service for the family will be held on Friday, August 14th in the Lessard-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, any donations made to the Canadian Legion Branch 88 Donate-the-Poppy-Fund, which he so loyally and proudly supported over many years, would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to LESSARD-STEPHENS FUNERAL HOME.
