Margaret Simmonds Obituary

SIMMONDS, Margaret Elizabeth (nee Regan) February 7 1946 - August 10 2020 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Simmonds Beloved wife of George and cherished mother to Derek and Laurie Ann (Gord) Tomchick. Predeceased by her parents James (1984) and Emily (2006) Regan and brother Daniel (2004) who she missed every day. Her only grandson Liam Simmonds held a very special place in her heart. Marg was the sister-in-law to George’s 3 brothers Gerry (Jan), John (Linda), Jim (Wendy) and Carole Plouffe-Regan (Denis Lacasse). Loving Aunt to 4 nephews and 4 nieces. Family was extremely important to Marg and she always made sure to stay in touch whether near or far. Marg was born in Orpington England and arrived with her parents after WWII at the age of 6 months to settle in the small town of Foleyet. Always caring for people Marg went on to become a Register Nurse, graduating from the Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1967 and started her career at Scarborough General; then returning to Timmins where she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. It was in Timmins where Marg was introduced to George. They married in 1970 and September 19th would have been their 50th anniversary. George was a Police Officer with the OPP and as they were transferred across the north, Marg worked at hospitals in Matheson, Moose Factory, Smooth Rock Falls, Iroquois Falls and Monteith Correctional Facility finishing in Timmins at CCAC. No matter where she nursed, she was always professional and treated everyone with kindness and respect. When Marg and George were nearing retirement, Marg knew where she wanted to be. Growing up in Foleyet, Ivanhoe Lake had always been a special place to her making the decision for them so very easy. They converted their small cottage into a home and in 1997 they became residents of Ivanhoe Lake. Marg was a strong supporter of the Ivanhoe Lake Cottagers’ Assoc. and was Secretary /Treasurer for over 20 years. Marg loved gardening and spent countless hours tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Marg had many wonderful qualities but perhaps her greatest was her generosity towards others. Marg had so many charities that she supported, was always ready to contribute to events in Foleyet and was ready and willing to help others when needed. Marg will be missed by so many dear friends and co-workers, many whom she stayed in touch with over the years. Friendship was something Marg treasured. She will be missed by so many that she touched with her kindness and compassion. Marg’s memory will live on in the perennial blooms of wild lupins, phlox and other beautiful flowers that she transplanted over the years around their property at Ivanhoe Lake. Christmas was her favorite time of the year, a time of giving, and even though no one could see their home Marg insisted they decorate the outside. When Marg was diagnosed with cancer, she accepted the challenge, never complained and fought it for over eight years through countless treatments of chemotherapy. Marg set the example of courage and tenacity. Marg wanted to thank Dr. Scott Young of the North East Ontario Regional Cancer Centre as well the Oncology Dept. and the Hospice Unit at TADH. She also wanted to express gratitude to all of the wonderful nurses and Doctors especially to Chrissy Barbuto for her sincere and loving care during those late nights. The flowers she provided were very special. Marg was so proud of her daughter Laurie Ann for taking control and staying with her, constantly providing care and comfort. In accordance with Marg’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. Due to the pandemic and that most of her family resides outside of the Province of Ontario, making travel difficult, Marg has requested to keep everyone safe. A private family celebration of her life (including some of her dearest friends) will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to LESSARD-STEPHENS FUNERAL HOME. Remembrance donations to the Timmins and District Hospital Oncology Department or the Hospice Unit would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences or donations can be made at www.lessardstephens.com And Marg wanted to include an old Irish verse: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may the Good Lord hold me in the palm of his hands.
