Marianne T. Gerig Toronto, Ontario Obituary

Marianne T. Gerig

Marianne Theresia Gerig Passed away at home on July 17, 2017 after a long illness. Born in Mannheim, Germany, Marianne immigrated to Canada in 1956 at the age of 21. She soon found a job at an insurance company and worked successfully in the industry until her early retirement. Before Marianne was afflicted with multiple sclerosis, she enjoyed her life to the fullest with her many friends and she loved to travel. She was a fiercely independent person, intelligent, curious, fun-loving and genuinely interested in the lives of others. Marianne is survived by her sister Rosa Maria, and by her cousin Herbert Gerig, his wife Ingrid and their children Karin and Hans Christian, all living in Germany. She did not have family in Canada but became part of the Schmitt family after meeting Ilona on the ship to Canada. Ilona was on her way to be married in Toronto and Marianne became a lifelong friend and an aunt to the four children she eventually had - Michael, Ronnie, Jacqueline and Stephen. There were many people involved in helping Marianne live her life at home as a progressively disabled person. A special thank you to the staff of Spectrum Healthcare, Pace Independent Living, Community Care Access Centre and Better Living Health and Community Services who helped her as best they could. Friends and family will be received at HERITAGE FUNERAL CENTRE, 50 Overlea Blvd. (416) 423-1000 on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 2 pm until the time of the Memorial Service at 2:30 pm in the funeral home chapel. Private cremation has taken place. Directions and online condolences may be found at www.heritagefuneralcentre.ca
