Lewis Mervin McDonald

Lewis, born in Owen Sound in 1929 to Edith and Jim McDonald, is survived by his wife of over 60 years and friend for over 80 years, June (nee Hayward), daughter Gina Platt, son Ryan (Susan Chilton), sister Ruth Browning (Gerry), and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Jerry. Lewis and June were married in Owen Sound in 1954 and moved to Waterloo four years later, when Lewis began his teaching career at Kitchener Collegiate Institute. Lewis became the technical director at Grand River Collegiate when it opened, and remained there until his retirement in 1985. Outside of the classroom, Lewis could be found on the golf course or playing in the bridge club of his church, First United in Waterloo. He also enjoyed his sailboat and his booth at the Port Elgin Antique & Collectibles show. Most often, Lewis would be found with a saxophone in his hands. He was a talented musician who started a high school dance band in the 1940s. Lewis played lead Alto in the Lloyd Kibbler Orchestra out of Owen Sound, and was a member of the musicians' union for over 50 years. A celebration of this kind and gentle man's life will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo in the Fireside Reception Room on Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 2-4 p.m., with remembrance beginning at 3 p.m. Condolences for the family and donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society may be arranged by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
