Wallace Robert Caughell

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Clair Hills Retirement Community, Waterloo, at the age of 92. Wallace will be missed by his darling wife of 70 years, Kathleen; his daughters,Dee Anne Dirksen (Eric) and Mary Sue Fitzpatrick (Dana); four grandchildren,Sarah Allen (Chris), Paul Dirksen, William Dirksen, and Caitlin Fitzpatrick; nieces and nephews, Patricia Caughill, Pamela Psutka, David Caughill (Carol), (GaryYoung), and Scott Snetsinger (Monika); and several grand-nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents David and Amelia Caughell, his brother David Howard (Howie) Caughill and sister-in-law Shirley Caughill, sister-in-law Dorothy Schenk and brother-in-law Elwood Schenk, sister-in-law Geraldine (Dee Dee) Snetsinger and brother-in-law John Snetsinger, and niece Janice Young. Wally’s first love was flying, and at the age of 18 learned to fly at the KW Flying Club. In December 1942, he joined the RCAF earning his pilot’s wings. After the war, he worked in the family transport business for a number of years before studying to become a Chartered Accountant with Davis, Dunn & Broughton. In 1966, Wallace joined Royalmetal Corporation in Galt as CFO, and later General Manager, taking early retirement in 1986. A charter member of the 404 K-W Wing RCAFA, Wally was very involved in Air Cadets in the early years after WWII. He was also a 50 year member of the Legion. A Mason for over 50 years, Wallace served as Master of the Waterloo Lodge No. 539, in 1974. An active ham radio operator since 1978, Wally belonged to the Elmira Radio Club. His call sign was VE3 LCR. Wally especially enjoyed sailing his Albacore sailboat at his summer cottage on Georgian Bay. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Sunday, August 14, 2016, from 2 – 4 p.m. in the Fireside Room. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wally’s memory to St. Mary’s Cardiac Care Centre would be greatly appreciated. This may be arranged by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
