Robert Joseph Burns

Robert “Bob” Burns Feb 1, 1930 – May 15, 2019 Bob Burns, late of Estevan, SK passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Ellen Burns; brothers, Jim (Nora) and Allen (Sarah) and grandson Daniel Burns and great grandson Hunter Himmelspach. Bob is survived by his two brothers, Roy (Anne), Wood Mountain, SK and Wilfred (Pat), Regina, SK and his children, Robert (Ann), Dallas (Bonnie), Brad, Ben, Melodye (Brad), Jewel (Nathan) and Trenna (Gus); 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Bob was born in 1930 on the family homestead in Flintoft District, SK. Bob bought and sold grain in the early 1950’s. He came to Estevan in 1957 and sold cars for Trout Motors for 3 years. He started with Simpson Sears in 1960 and worked in Estevan until the mid-1980’s and Weyburn until mid-1990’s and then drove cab for 10 years. All the while he pursued his passion in sports, coaching hockey and baseball, enjoying many successes and private time to ump ballgames. Known as “THE UMP” he umped baseball, fastball and softball games throughout southern Saskatchewan well into his 80’s. His fairness and quick comments endeared him to both players and fans. He was instrumental in developing programs to train young officials and was inspirational to all the sport of baseball. Bob was active with the Conservative Party and always had a comment. The Visitation was held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Chapel at Hall Funeral Services, Estevan, SK. The Celebration of Life was held on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 1: 00 p.m. at the Cactus Park - Bob Burns Field, Estevan, Sask. with Pastor Walter Engel officiating. Interment took place at Estevan City Cemetery with the lunch reception following at the Royal Canadian Legion, Estevan. In memory of Bob, memorial donations may be made to the Estevan Minor Baseball, 1910 Matte Court, Estevan, SK, S4A 2W3. Yvonne Clark with Hall Funeral Services, Estevan assisted Bob’s family.
