Obituary for Bruce Wellington Ashdown

It is with great sadness, that the family announce Bruce’s passing at the Victoria Hospital. Bruce was born in the Melfort area to Alfred and Esther (Rush) Ashdown. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Bennie, Darrell and Eugene and sisters Doris, Ethel, Edith, Ellen, Gwenyth, Grace and Hazel. Bruce is survived by his loving wife Gladys of 68 years; daughters Annette (Ed) Lozinsky of P.A., Paulette (David) Babcock of Radisson; one grandson Mark (Wendy); three great grandchildren Jordan, Alicia, Chantell MacLeod of Langham; one granddaughter Colleen (Brent) Marshall of Saskatoon; two sisters-in-law Florrie Clarke and Doris Millhouse both of Notthingham, England; nieces Louise (Ed Berger), Gladys (Bruce Kistner) of Bjorkdale, Nora (Paul Gambling) of Arizona, Sheila (Orville O’Brien) of Melfort; nephews Arthur (Maxine) Ashdown of Tisdale, Keith (Edith) Marlowe of Rosetown; many great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and his two yorkies Tuppence and Taz. He joined the Canadian Army in Regina on Jan 4, 1940 at the outbreak of WWII, served all in England with R.C.O.C. 1st Division. He was very proud to have served his King and Country. In December, 1940 he married his sweetheart Gladys. He lived in Melfort, Saskatoon and retired to Prince Albert. Bruce was a member of R.C.L. 63, English Welsh Society and Blue Jays Fan Club all of Saskatoon. He enjoyed going down to Minnesota to watch the Twins and Blue Jays, also spent winters in Yuma, AZ. He loved camping and fishing. During his retirement he knitted hundreds of toques for kids for the IODE which he donated. The family would like to thank Dr. Swart and the staff at the Victoria Hospital. His wish was to be cremated and no funeral service. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Melfort. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Prince Albert, SPCA or the PA Wildlife Association. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, Lorne Adams, Funeral Director.
