Obituary for Hilda Martha Basaraba

BASARABA " Mrs. Hilda Martha “Pat”

On February 24, 2008 the life of a special mother, sister, Gran and friend came to an end at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert with her family at her side at the age of 87. Mom was born in the small English village of Whitchurch to Jack and Fannie Wainwright on September 7, 1920. She was the sixth eldest of a family of fourteen children. Mom enlisted in the British Army and served her country during WWII as a plane spotter on the south coast of England. In 1945 she met her husband Emily in London and came to Canada in 1946 to start her new life. She lived in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Victoria, Germany, Calgary and Regina. Mom worked many years at the Flamingo Motel and also as a Commissionaire. She was a faithful member of St. Albans Church and a life member of the Legion and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. After dad’s passing in 1984, she had many outings with her special sister Daisy, traveling, shopping and volunteering. When mom went into Ika’s Care Home she kept her mind sharp by knitting, doing word puzzles and reading her precious books. She always tried to encourage everyone at the home to keep active in mind and body (whether it be walking or reading). Being English she always took pleasure in having her afternoon tea with her fellow residents. With her English accept and English ways you always knew you were special when she called you Duck, a special endearment of hers. Her family was very important to her and she loved and worried about each and every one of them. She was loved and respected by all those that had the pleasure of knowing her. Mom is survived by her children Mike (Lavina), Alan (Earla), Doris (Walter), Neal (Susan) and Debbie (Don); her grandchildren Paula (Dean), Brian (Shauna), Dan, Patti (Mike), Roseanne, RaeAnn (Shawn), Melissa (Eric), Chad, Stacey (Eric), Chris (Tia), Owen and Jenny; her great grandchildren Jourdain, Austin, Jahnessa, Danica, Heidi, Joel, Zachary, Addy and Ethan; her loving sister Daisy Allman; brothers Bert (Bett), Harry (Edna), Colin (Gwynn), Pete (Eileen) and Eric (Audrey); her in-laws Alex (Mary), Walter (Annette), Adam, Iris and Dora and also many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her extended family Vera, Alex, Sonja, Slav, Radita and Lynn of Ika’s Care Home. Mom was predeceased by her parents Jack and Fannie Wainwright; her husband Emil; in-laws Nick and Annie Basaraba; her special granddaughter Rhonda Basaraba; sisters Kath, Freda and Doris and brothers Jack, Joe, George and Noel. In lieu of other tributes, donations can be made to the donors’ charity of choice. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at St. Alban’s Cathedral, 1410 Bishop McLean Crescent, Prince Albert, SK. with the Reverend Michael Hawkins and the Reverend Ken Lyons officiating. Interment will be held at the Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director.
