Obituary for Martin Joseph Gareau

GAREAU â€" Martin Joseph
May 31, 1961 â€" May 18, 2008

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden and tragic death of Martin on Sunday, May 18th on Grand Cayman Island. Marty went to the Caymans four years ago to help with the rebuilding of the island after Hurricane Ivan. There he worked for his cousin’s company CI Precast as production manager, giving a 100% as he always did and becoming a wellâ€"liked and well-respected member of the community. He also enjoyed the sun and ocean to its fullest. In Prince Albert, Martin is best known for his years in farming, running both a conventional farm in the late 1980s and early 1990’s and later becoming one of the pioneers in the extraction of essential oils from a variety of spice crops for sale as ingredients to the food flavouring market. For six years, Maple Ridge Farms produced cilantro, caraway seed, dillseed and industrial hemp oil. In 2000, Martin designed a pilot scale prototype of an essential oil extractor. He also served as president of the Saskatchewan Herb and Spice Association. Faithful son of Jean Gareau (Florence). Predeceased by his mother Muriel (Chicoine) Gareau. Loving father of Raeanne, Phillip, and Samantha. Ever-teasing brother of Gisèle & Timon, Joanne & Brian, Guy & Darcie, Colette & Luc, Carmen & Bill and Elaine & Gary. Crazy uncle to 14 nieces and nephews. Of his many aunts, uncles and cousins, special mention of Gilles, Guy and Claude Langlois, who were cousins as well as his close friends in the Caymans. His children have great memories of their dad, camping and fishing, and riding in the combine with him. In the last few years, Martin has stayed close to them through frequent phone calls and visits. Everyone who knew him will remember Martin for his big heart and his unique sense of humour. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2008. A Celebration of Martin’s Life will be held at 2 :00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2008. Both services will be held at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 1505 â€" 13th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with the celebrant Reverend Father Maurice Fiolleau. Interment will be at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens, Garden of Gethsemane. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director
