Obituary for Rita Melby

MELBY " Rita was born in the Stranrare area, May 3, 1916, and passed away peacefully August 7, 2007 in the Birchview Nursing Home, at the age of 91. She went to school in Stranrare and became a teacher herself where she taught for 25 plus years at a country school in South Branch. She married Wallen Melby and together they farmed and raised their two children. Rita had many hobbies. She enjoyed curling, knitting, quilt making, crocheting, gardening, carding wool, canning and berry picking. She loved baseball and watching hockey. Rita will be missed by her daughter Verna Steen and her children Carney and her daughter Stephanie, Hali and her daughter Jayd and Koel; her son Philip Melby and his children Carmen Melby, Karen (David) Grenier and their children Madeline and Amy, and Coreen (Craig Roberts) Melby; her brothers and sisters Henry Cortus; Arthur (Josephine) Cortus; Alice (Emile) Belanger; Joan Dieno; brother-in-law Victor Wardrop as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Rita was predeceased by her husband Wallen; her grandchild Alfen Nerland; her parents Hendrick and Minnie Cortus; her sister Mary Wardrop; her sister-in-law Annie Cortus; her brother-in-law Jack Dieno and her nephew Kerry Dieno. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 11, 2007, at Gray's Funeral Chapel, 575 28th St W, with Richard Callbeck officiating. Interment will be held at the Livelong Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care Unit. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
