Obituary for William Douglas Smiley

SMILEY â€" William Douglas Carlson
November 2, 1916 â€" February 28, 2008

Bill passed away on February 28, 2008 at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 91. He was predeceased in August 2006 by his wife of sixty years, Kae. He is survived by his daughter Margaret (David) Eaton and grandchildren Megan and Torrey Swan; son Ross; daughter-in-law Sandra Smiley and grandsons Jason, Christopher and Michael Smiley. Aside from attending university and serving as a pilot in the RCAF in World War II, Bill lived and worked in and for Prince Albert. Always an educator - as a teacher, administrator, librarian and archivist, he influenced the lives of many. Before and after his retirement, he was passionate about his many volunteer activities, especially the Cosmopolitan Club (of which he was a charter member) and the Prince Albert Historical Society and his beloved museum. He devoted countless hours developing the archives which now bear his name. His community efforts were recognized in 1995 with the Provincial Tourism’s Volunteer of the Year Award and in 2005 he was selected as “One of the 100 People Who Made a Difference” in Saskatchewan and received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. Finally, he was honoured locally as Prince Albert’s Citizen of the Year for 2005. Although he appreciated these honours he remained a very humble man. On the social side, Bill loved to dance, curl, play cards and to spend time at Emma Lake. An educator until the end, he bequeathed his body to his alma mater, The University of Saskatchewan, for medical research. In lieu of other tributes, please consider a donation in his name to the Prince Albert Cosmopolitan Club, P.O. Box 181, Prince Albert, SK. S6V 5R5 or the Prince Albert Historical Society, 10 River Street West, Prince Albert, SK. S6V 8A9. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008 at St. Alban’s Cathedral, 1410 Bishop McLean Crescent, Prince Albert, SK. with the Reverend Michael Hawkins officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director.
