Raymond John Furneaux May 15, 1921 - July 6, 2013 Raymond was born to Walter and Ettie Furneaux on the home quarter at Swanell, Sask. (Cymric) on May 15, 1921, the first of four children. He attended Daisybank School until his help was needed on the family farm and took over the family farm at age 17, when his father died. Ray married Leta Melville on March 23rd, 1949. They ran the family farm together until 2000 when they retired to move to Watrous. In 2013, they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. They have one child, Karen Smith, and two grandchildren - Charity Brookes (Aurora, ON) and Aaron Smith (Newmarket,ON). Ray had moved to Newmarket in May 2013 to be near family. He died at the age of 92, at dawn, on July 6, 2013. He leaves behind his loving wife, Leta; daughter Karen; Son-in-law Charles; grandaughter Charity and her husband, Michael; grandson Aaron; brother Russell (Vancouver); sister Norma (Semans) and nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sister Marjorie. Although Ray was primarily a farmer, he spent many winters in Vancouver where he attained his Journeyman Status in Motor Vehicle Mechanics and worked as a machinist. He loved engines. He enjoyed working with metal and often built or altered large machinery. The last two small items that he built were a welder and an engine lifter. Ray was a licensed private pilot and a Ham Radio operator. He was a member of the Steam Association and spent many summers working with the Western Development Museum as a certified steam engineer. The funeral for Ray will be held in Watrous at Fotheringham Chapel, 102 2nd Ave E, on July 19th at 1100 AM. Refreshments will follow at the Watrous Senior’s Centre on Main Street.
