Kate Newkirk Shreve Barnes, 64, of Marion, died at her residence on January 17, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents James Wilfred Shreve and Mavis Widney Shreve of Mobile. She was a devoted wife to James Murrel Barnes, Jr., and the mother of Courtney Newkirk Barnes of Aiken, SC and Crawford Zeagler Barnes McWilliams (Brenton) of Orange Beach. She also leaves behind her sisters: Lucy Shreve Norris of Summerville, SC, Emily Shreve Revere ( Doug) of Fairhope, Teresa Zeagler Shreve (Joel Mask) of Tuscaloosa; brothers James Wilfred Shreve, Jr. (Diane) of Humble, TX, Lewis Timothy Shreve (Barkley) of Mobile, Ret. Col. Bartholomew Usher Shreve (Kanjana Nim) of Valrico, FL and Patrick Oscar Shreve (Pam) of Mobile. The family will host visitors in their home at 209 Centreville St. Marion from 6-8 on Thursday January 19. Funeral services will be held at 3pm Friday January 20, 2017 at Our Lady of Lourdes in Greensboro, AL. Father Wayne Herpin will be officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel will be directing. Mrs. Barnes will be laid to rest the next day, Saturday January 21, at 9 am at Mobile Memorial Gardens in Mobile, Alabama. Graveside blessing will be given by Monsignor Warren Wall. Active pallbearers will be her brothers Jim, Lewis, Bart, and Pat along with Joel Mask and Brenton McWilliams. Honorary pallbearers will be employees at Cahaba Mental Health and the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes, Greensboro, AL. Kate was born June 11, 1952, in Shreveport, LA. She attended Saint Joan of Arc Catholic School, Convent of Mercy, and Bishop-Toolen High School in Mobile. She graduated from The University of Alabama in 1974. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi and remained a supportive and active alumna throughout her entire life after college. After graduating, Kate worked at the Culverhouse College of Commerce. Several years later, the couple moved to Marion for her to begin working at the Cahaba Center for Mental Health located in Selma. Outside of work, she was involved in the Jaycees, Club 15, and the Alabama Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Kate was a loyal parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greensboro. She will be remembered as a loyal sister, wife, mother, and friend. She never hesitated to prioritize the needs of others over her own personal needs. She was always an attentive, elegant, and gracious host; paying attention to every detail; ensuring guests at her home, Jubilee, would enjoy themselves immensely.
