As she attended Selma City Schools, she was a member of the first senior class who graduated from the brand new Parrish High School in 1940. She then attended Judson College with a scholarship during the war years and completed Judson in 1944 with a teaching degree in English and a minor in music. During these years, she was still a member of First Baptist Church.

She began her teaching career at Carlowville High School, which was an enjoyable experience through her years there. In 1958, she and her husband, Walt, moved to a new school – Southside Middle School. They remained there the rest of their teaching careers. During their teaching career, the school became a high school. They were members of Shiloh Baptist Church. She taught 32 years in the Dallas County School System.
