Obituary for Harlan A. Page

Harlan Ashley Page, Jr., age 85, passed away Saturday January 3, 2009 after an extended illness. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday January 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in New Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. Mike Edmondson officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura Louise Holman of Ozark, Alabama, and Harlan Ashley Page, Sr. of Samson, Alabama, a sister, Laurie Page Burnett of Moultrie, Georgia, and a twin sister, Hilda Page Anderson of Gastonia, North Carolina. He spent his early childhood in Geneva, Alabama. His family later moved to Moultrie, Georgia where he graduated from Moultrie High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II and served as a fighter pilot. When he was discharged from military service, he entered the University of Georgia, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. In 1953 he married Peggy Lorenne Wise of Selma, Alabama. Since that time and until his death they spent the majority of their married years in Bay Minette, Alabama where he owned and operated Harlan Page Furniture and Gift Company. He was a member of the Bay Minette Kiwanis Club and actively served in the Voluntary Fire Department, Parent-Teacher organizations, Chamber of Commerce, and First United Methodist Church boards. Upon retiring they lived in Selma ten years. He devoted much of his time to volunteer work. A great enjoyment he shared with others was helping to restore the old St. James Hotel. While in Selma he served on the West Alabama Rehabilitation Board, Sabra Board, Salvation Army Board, and was a recipient of the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award. He was an active member of Church Street United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, Peggy, of 55 years, he is survived by a son, Harlan Ashley Page III (Whitney), and a granddaughter, Caroline Page of Homewood, Alabama. Also a sister, Mildred Louise Page of Gastonia, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund of First United Methodist Church of Bay Minette, 120 West 2nd Street Bay Minette, AL 36507-0338.
