Frank L. Horsfall III passed away quietly in his sleep on January 13, 2017. He had been in ill health for the past 3 years with pulmonary hypertension. He was 77. Funeral services will be 10:30AM January 23 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3530 W. Magee Rd, in Tucson, Arizona preceded by a viewing from 9 to 10AM and followed by a cemetery service with military honors at 1:00PM at the Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Marana, 15950 N. Luckett Road. An additional viewing will be January 22 from 6 to 9PM at the Adair Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. A native of New York City, Frank attended Flushing HS in NYC, earning the Eagle Scout Award and serving with distinction on the student tribunal. He graduated from Amherst College, MA, with a degree in chemistry. He served 28 months in the US Army, graduating from Officer Candidate School and several specialty schools. He met and married in 1966 his wife, Susan, in Cleveland, OH, where he pursued graduate studies in microbiology at Case Western Reserve University and began a family. To maintain his Active Reserve status he joined the Ohio National Guard, and held several leadership positions before retiring as a Lt Col in 1990. Trips to Grayling for Summer Camp with the Guard introduced him to the Northern Michigan area and in 1970 he and his wife purchased a vacation cottage on Lake Margrethe. From graduate school he and an associate formed a company, Biosphere, to research and develop LLMO, a liquid suspension of specially selected microbes for treating waste water. Later its uses expanded to include aquaculture and fish waste. He continued to research and teach in the area of waste-water microbiology, relocating for 18 years to Switzerland to further develop and market these products. While there, he pursued his love of Scouting, serving as Scoutmaster of 2 BSA troops in the Geneva, Switzerland, area and on District and Council staffs in Transatlantic Council, eventually being awarded a Silver Beaver. Joining the Mormon Church in 1993 in Switzerland, Frank was a stimulating teacher and a dedicated leader. To be closer to family, he and Sue returned to the US in 2008, staying for several months at their Grayling house before purchasing a more permanent residence in Tucson, Arizona. In Tucson, Frank taught chemistry and microbiology for a time at Pima Community College, served as President of the local Veterans Club, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sunflower Community HOA. He is survived by his wife Susan, son David and wife Laura, son Christopher and wife Angela, grandchildren Kathleen, Peter, Mark, Nicholas, Alexandra, Ethan, Elizabeth and Emily, and a sister, Mary Webster. In lieu of flowers those who would like to memorialize Frank are encouraged to make a donation to the Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Banner University Medical Center, Tucson, Arizona in his memory.
