Clara Kvaran

Clara Caldwell Kvaran quietly passed with her family around her, on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Einar Ragnarsson Kvaran on December 13, 2012. Clara was born in Pueblo, Colorado on July 15, 1922 to Dr. C.N. Caldwell and Margaret Mann Caldwell. After graduating from Central High School in Pueblo she attended Colorado State University–Pueblo. The year was then 1941 and in preparation for the United States’ entry into the Second World War, her father, a physician and in the US Naval Reserves, was called up and posted to San Francisco, California. Clara then transferred to the University of California in Berkeley where she met her future husband, Einar Einarsson Kvaran, an Icelandic student studying marine engineering there. They were married on October 21, 1944, the same day that Einar graduated. At that time they moved, the first of many moves, to where his new job was, in Siglufjordur, located in the far northern regions of Iceland. She was to stay there for 7 years, learning the very difficult Icelandic language, while having her first three sons, Ragnar (1945), Einar (1948), and Hannes (1950). In 1952 Einar was employed by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and was posted to Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, where the family was to remain for thirteen years. It was during this period that Clara’s independent nature became apparent to all. She would fearlessly venture into the local “native bazaars,” would drive on dirt roads through tropical jungles in her little VW bug, would charm armed Tamil Tiger rebels and even have another son, Geir (1962). After leaving Sri Lanka the family moved to Manila, Philippines; Jakarta, Indonesia; Malta, and finally to FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Clara left her mark in all these places and stories of her antics abound. Upon Einar’s retirement they moved back to Pueblo to be near her mother and upon her mother’s death, and partly because 50 years of smoking had made living at 6,000 feet difficult, Clara and Einar moved to Sun City, Arizona in 2000. Einar passed away at their home there and Clara lived at home until the end. In lieu of cards or flowers in her memory the family asks that people vote for Bernie Sanders in November.
