Ernest Scott Obituary

Ernest Craig Scott passed away at his home at the Woodmark at Sun City, AZ on Thursday, September 4, 2014. Craig was born in Donora, PA on August 5, 1918. His father abandoned Craig and his older brother Eric when Craig was two. His brother died on Christmas day at the age of 12 of pneumonia, while he and Craig were living in a orphanage because his mother, Hermione, was temporarily unable to afford to care for them. As a teen, Craig worked odd jobs including driving a hearse for a local funeral home, in order to help his mom make ends meet. On a blind date, he met Rhoda Jane Kepler and they married on September 5, 1942, less than 8 months after enlisting in the Army Air Corps. Serving in WWII, Craig worked in Intelligence primarily in the European theater. He and Rhoda both held Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education, and Craig taught English and Geography for junior high school in Prince Georges County, Maryland until he retired in 1980. Craig and Rhoda relocated to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the weekend following their daughter’s college graduation from Virginia Tech. His hobbies included cross word puzzling and reading, which explains why he was still very sharp-minded up to his death. Craig was a voracious football fan who loved his daughter’s Virginia Tech Hokies and Pittsburg Steelers. Having grown up during the depression, Craig was the biggest tipper he could afford to be, always thinking of others. His lifelong love Rhoda, wife of 50 years, died in 1992. Survivors include his daughter Robin Elizabeth Bain and his son-in-law Douglas Bain, grandsons Arron and Niko, great-granddaughter Natalia and her mother Joann, and countless friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014, at 2:00 pm, at the Woodmark, 17207 N Boswell Blvd, Sun City, AZ 85373. Everyone is welcome to attend and help his family celebrate Craig’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the VFW.
