Gordon James Schempp - “Gordy”- August 7, 1927 – July 16, 2015 Gordon “Gordy” Schempp, Age 87 of Peoria, AZ passed away peacefully at his home Thursday evening July 16, 2015. Preceded in death by oldest son Alan Schempp, survived by his cherished wife Elizabeth “Beth Ann” Schempp, Son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Connie Schempp, Pleasanton, CA, Ron Schempp and Amy Lavelle, Apple Valley, MN, Eric and Sheila Schempp, Chandler, AZ. Grandchildren; Jamie, Ashley, Kyle, Cole and Christian Schempp. Gordy was born and raised in Glen Ullin, ND. Gordy joined the Navy at age 17 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. He served honorably in World War II (1943-44), the Korean War (1950-52) and Naval Reserve. Gordy graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1949 with a teaching degree in English and Social Studies. He taught both High School and Grade School after graduation. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Beth Ann” Swedberg on June 12, 1950 in Ironwood, MI. Gordy started his storied career with the Bell System in 1952 in Minneapolis, MN and finished as an Executive Director of Labor Relations in Denver, CO after 36 years. Omaha, NE was their primary residence where he and Beth Ann raised their four sons. Gordy’s enthusiasm as teacher, instructor, and organizer was always evident throughout his life. Education was his lifetime passion. He served six years on the Omaha - District 66 School Board. He was the visionary and founding father of Omaha’s Metropolitan Technical Community College. Gordy and Beth Ann retired to Peoria, AZ in 1990 and have lived in the Westbrook Village Community where they have developed many wonderful friendships with great neighbors and church members. Never one to sit still, and always willing to give back, Gordy continued his volunteerism serving on The American Lutheran Church Board of Directors and Church Personnel Committee. Gordy served on the SUN Health Foundation Board to fund raise for the foundation and meet its goals. He was also involved with Aqua Fria Kiwanis Club of Sun City to fund noteworthy and charitable causes and events. Gordy and Beth Ann recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 12, 2015. The Schempp family would like to thank everyone for their calls to offer help, support and sharing the many fond memories of Gordy and his extraordinary life!
