Louis Lazzara Obituary

Louis Joseph Lazzara, passed away November 19, 2014 in Peoria, Arizona The son of Salvatore and Johanna (Kozojet) Lazzara, he was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 8, 1923. Lou was a World War II veteran, served in the Army Air Force, 388th Battalion. He flew over 25 missions in B17 bombers over Europe, including 3 missions supporting the D- Day landing in Normandy. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, 4 Bronze Stars, 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and membership in the Lucky Bastards Club (for more than 25 missions over enemy territory). The son of the former Welterweight Champion Joe Dundee, when Lou returned home to Baltimore after the war, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a professional boxer, fighting under the name “Lou Dundee” for six years as a welter weight. He went on to serve in the Baltimore City Police Dept. rising to the rank of lieutenant. After his retirement from the force in 1973n he then spent 12 years as a private detective before moving to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1985. He moved to Peoria, AZ, in 2009. An avid golfer, Lou was a member of Pine Lakes Country Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, the Elks club, and St. Andrews Catholic church in Myrtle Beach, SC, and a former member of the Country Club of MD in Towson, MD. He was also an avid Baltimore Oriole, Baltimore Colt and Baltimore Raven fan. He was preceded in death by three wives, Rose Ferrare Lazzara, Wanda Kuful Lazzara and Mildred Villanni Lazzara, a daughter Angela Lazzara, a brother, Joseph Lazzara and a great granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Hammock. He is survived by his daughter, Jo Ann Poffel and her husband, Jerome, three grandchildren, Angela (Bryan) Hammock, Elizabeth Poffel-(Nathan Wachira), Brian (Nazira) Poffel, 4 great grandchildren and a brother, Robert.
