Obituary for Mary Frances Schott

After putting up a most valiant fight for several years, Fran Schott lost her final battle with cancer on May 22, 2016.
Born March 1, 1938 in Manhattan, Kansas the third of four children to Willard and Oma (Grace) Schwartz. Fran attended Kansas State University where she was valedictorian of her class of 1960 and graduated summa cum laude. She attended graduate school in Michigan and started her career in medical technology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit before moving to Palo Alto to work at Stanford Hospital where she met the love of her life, Dan Schott. Married in Phoenix on March 27, 1966, she devoted her life to nurturing and supporting her most fortunate family.

Fran loved to garden and rose to the challenge of cultivating gorgeous gardens in the desert’s severe climate. She loved learning and sharing her knowledge in the Master Gardener community. She also volunteered for many years with the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic where she was grateful for the opportunity to help the visually impaired have access to scientific texts.

Fran is survived by her soulmate Dan, her daughters Laura Birkholz and husband Steve, and Karen Weisblatt and husband Jon, and her precious grandchildren whom she loved without limit, Ethan and Eliana (Ellie) Weisblatt and Sophia and Bradley Birkholz. She is also survived by her loving brother and sister Dale Schwartz and Martha (Kitty) Brain. Fran is preceded in death by her parents, older brother Will Schwartz, and beloved golden retrievers Loxie and Rosie.

A celebration of her life is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of your choice, or to Fran’s favorites: The Salvation Army, St. Mary’s Food Bank or Doctors Without Borders.
