Ralph Barr Obituary

Ralph Edison Barr (83) passed away surrounded by family after a short illness on October 6, 2017. He was born on November 4th, 1933 at St Paul Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Ralph Edison Barr, Sr. and his sister, Janice Hansen. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Shirley Ann Barr, his son Robert (Karin), Daughters Cheryl Lake, Karen Reed, Diane (Jeff) Johnson, step son, Peter (Mary) Jappe, 20 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Audrey Buerk of Roseville California. Ralph was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in electrical engineering. After winning a science project contest from Honeywell while still in high school, he became an employee with Honeywell where he spent his entire career retiring in 1996. His proudest achievement was the work he did as a hardware design engineer on the space shuttle. Ralph's hobbies included ham radio and he had been an operator since he was a teen. In Phoenix he had been president of the West Valley Ham Radio Club and the Thunderbird Club in the Valley of the Sun. He was instrumental in establishing a ham radio station at the Phoenix Science Center in Phoenix and was a volunteer there for several years. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Lutheran Church, 15649 N 7th Street, Phoenix on October 24th at 2:00pm. Interment will be at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton, Minnesota Memorials may be made to the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology or Hospice of the Valley.
