Betty Lou Morphew died peacefully at her home in Tucson Arizona August 26, 2020. With her were her daughter Wendy Sue Morphew of New York, rescue poodle Peter, and devoted caregivers who helped her remain in her home these final years. She is survived by her sister Marilyn Nielsen Lindsay, nephews Ricky, Bruce and James Philipson and nieces Christie, Kim, Laurie and Kari. She is preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Ellen Philipson, brother Richard Philipson, and husband of sixty years Gordon Sterling Morphew. Born Betty Lou Philipson in Mankato on October 9, 1923, she attended Mankato High School, Mankato State Teachers College, and received her Master’s Degree in education at the University of Arizona. She married Gordon in 1944, and they lived in Alaska and Colorado before settling in Tucson. She loved her books, her dogs, and teaching second-graders. A prolific writer all her life, she was famous for her letters, all in perfect penmanship. She was a member of the Lend A Hand Senior Writers Group and contributed to their book of published stories, Wisdom and Reverie. You can read her stories here. For those wishing to memorialize Betty, please consider supporting public school teachers through DonorsChoose.org. Donations would also be appreciated to Lend a Hand Senior Assistance.
