Albert Weaver Obituary

Albert Bruce Weaver Emeritus Professor at the University of Arizona, died on October 24, 2012 in Tucson, AZ, at the age of 95. He was born in Anaconda, MT, on May 27, 1917 and grew up in Butte where he attended the Irish Christian Brothers High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Montana in 1940, his Master's degree from the University of Idaho in 1941, and his PhD in physics from the University of Chicago in 1952. During World War II, he served in the Naval Ordinance Lab in Washington, D.C. While living in D.C., he met and married Adeline Okerberg of Marathon, IA. He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Washington, then moved to the University of Colorado to become Chair of their physics department. Finally, in 1957, he moved to Tucson to become the Chair of the University of Arizona Physics Department before becoming Provost and Executive Vice-President of the University of Arizona. He worked to help build the U. of A. into a nationally recognized center of academic excellence to provide all students in the state, regardless of background or financial status, the same opportunities he had enjoyed. In 2007, he received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the U. of A. for his contributions to the university. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Adeline and their three children, Janet Milligan (David) of Tucson, Gail Bangert (Jerry) of Tucson, and John Weaver (Sharon) of Hanover, NH. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Stephen Hileman (Patricia), Chris Hileman (Karla), Carolyn Bangert, Scott Bangert (Lindsay), Jonathan Milligan, Lance Milligan, Eleanor Weaver, and Claire Weaver—as well as eight great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Jack Weaver of Hope, B.C. Though he will be profoundly missed, his family is deeply grateful that he has gone to his Savior, Jesus Christ.
