Anna Theresa Swetlik

Anna Theresa Kientzle (Howey) Swetlik passed away February 8, 2013 in Tucson. She born April 8, 1923 in Pittsfield, Illinois to Bernard and M. Elizabeth Riley Kientzle. On November 7, 1942, she married Lieutenant Henry E. Howey of Arcola, Illinois at Foster Field in Victoria, Texas. He was killed in India while flying supplies over the Himalayas on August 17, 1943. From this marriage she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Joan Howey of Huntsville, Texas and her daughter, Susan Howey Gallegos with whom she lived in Tucson. Susan was born after her father's death. Anna Theresa returned to the University of Illinois in Urbana in 1946 and lived in the veterans' housing with her two small children while she finished her BA (1949) and MA (1950) in the teaching of Spanish. She taught in Illinois high schools for 31 years at Roanoke, Pittsfield, Riverside-Brookfield, and Glenbard East. In 1965 she married Alfred Swetlik of Glen Ellyn, Illinois who died in 2007. She is also survived by her sister, Frances (Kientzle) Chiasson of Tucson; her stepdaughter and son-in-law, Karen and Terry Reeves of O'Fallon, Illinois. Her six grandchildren are Anna Theresa Gallegos, Laura Howey, Michael VandeVelde, David VandeVelde, Annette and Robert VandeVelde Dixon, and Julie and Reggie VandeVelde LaRue. Her seven great-grandchildren are Liam, Eamonn, Áine, Cullan and Aileen Dixon, Sofia Gallegos-Gulliver, and Aric LaRue. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, her grandson, Matthew Howey; her three sisters, Mary Jo Kientzle, Helen Kientzle, and Dorothy Kientzle Lyons, and her stepdaughter, Christina Swetlik.
