Carl Van Tasell Obituary

Carl L. Van Tasell 2/10/1920 - 2/7/2012 Carl was born in Quasqueton, IA, and grew up on a farm just outside Independence, IA. He attended junior college for two years, and then transferred to the University of Iowa where he studied engineering. He enlisted in the Cadet Corps in 1941 so that he could learn to fly, and that became his life's work. He piloted B-25s in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. After the war he flew for TWA, and then was recalled for the Korean conflict. He served a total of 30 years as a pilot in the United States Air Force, including a tour of duty in Viet Nam, flying B-47s and then B-52s. He retired at the rank of Colonel in 1971, and he enjoyed a second career as a corporate pilot for several years after his retirement. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 68 years, Jean; his son, David (Eileen) and daughter, Dianne (Steve); grandchildren, Carl (Jessica), Carrie (Mischa) and Megan and three great-grandchildren. He was a modest, gentle, and generous man who set an example of quiet dignity and courage for all who knew him. He could fly anything, he could fix anything, he loved a good joke, and he loved his family. We will carry him in our hearts always. The family expresses our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Kanmar Place for making his final weeks peaceful and comfortable. Memorials may be made to Casa de la Luz Foundation, 7740 North Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85704. Arrangements entrusted to ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel (742-7901).
