Carla Marie Ewald Pedersen Born February 9, 1942 in Anderson, Indiana, passed away September 9, 2012 in Tucson. She graduated from Ball State, where she organized civil rights sit-ins, and later attended the University of Arizona. Carla twice served as Vice Chair of the Pima County Democratic Party and attended three Democratic Conventions. She served as Sheriff Clarence Dupnik's first campaign manager in 1980, and on the board for the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. Carla actively participated in the Sanctuary movement in the 1980s, smuggling political refugees from Central America. She also worked with Junior League, ACLU, and Mothers of the Disappeared. Carla loved genealogy, writing, her family and pets. She was preceded in death by her parents, Monetta Mildred "Millie" Hart Ewald and Gilbert Ernest Ewald. She is survived by her loving sons, Hans of Phoenix; Alexander and his daughter, Aven, Christian and his wife Lana, and step-grandchild Emberly Davis, all of Tucson; brother, James W. Ewald and nephew, Jim Ewald of Anderson, IN, and uncle William Hart of Zionsville, IN; and beloved cousins, relatives and friends. Services will be held Sunday, September 16, at 4:30 p.m. at Southside Presbyterian, 317 W. 23rd St. Memorial donations can be sent to the Broken Arrow Fund, P.O.
