Obituary for Donald Charles Ameling

Donald Charles Ameling, DMD, soared into Heaven on October 14, 2012. Born to Harry and Iva Ameling on December 6, 1933, Don, was a gracious and good man, who while yearning for travel and adventure, always found his way home to Tucson where he practiced dentistry for 45 years. While attending Tucson High School, he lettered in football and track, and in 1952 helped the Badgers win the state football championship. Thirty-one years ago he married the love of his life, Shirley. Together they traveled the world one adventure at a time. Don shared his love of the outdoors with his wife, daughters and grandchildren, teaching them to ski, hunt, fish, and ride horses. He coached his granddaughters little league teams as well. A natural athlete, Don pursued adventure around the world, hitchhiking to Alaska as a young man, taking safaris to Africa, captaining his boat, flying his airplane, skiing down a mountain or skydiving whenever given the chance. This was the epitome of Don Ameling. Even as his health declined from the ravages of Alzheimer's, he would hop on his bicycle and be spotted racing down the hills in Sabino Canyon, his favorite place in Tucson. Don received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and his Doctor of Medical Dentistry from the University of Oregon. He was a generous supporter of many charitable causes. Don served on the boards and committees of the DM-50 supporting the men and women of the Air Force, La Frontera, and The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona. He and Shirley were active members in the Church of Christ for many years. Don is survived by his wife, Shirley; their daughters, Nanci Ameling, Carol Dietz (Mark), Ellen Ameling, Charlotte Haskell, Susan Luedtke (Kurt), Kathryn Haskell and Barbara Nichols (Fred); his eight grandsons and his two granddaughters. A Celebration of Don's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 at The Church of Christ, 145 N. Country Club Rd. Tucson Arizona. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Don's name to the Alzheimer's Association, on line at www.alz.org or 3003 S.
