HIPPEL, Donald A., 86, of Oro Valley, Arizona. Passed away on July 1, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving wife, Marie and sister-in-law, Norma Porter and his friends, Fred and Kathy Stupp. Don was born on January 5, 1925 in Toledo, Ohio to Hubert A. and Helen R. (Newton) Hippel. He was a Platoon Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He served our country at Omaha Beach and Battle of The Bulge. During the invasion on "D" Day he landed with the 3rd wave in Normandy. He suffered head trauma and was temporarily blinded. The second time he was wounded was at the Battle of the Bulge with a bullet in the hip that medically was never able to be removed. He was awarded two silver Stars, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After the war he was a high level Intelligence Officer for the Army, and was in charge of the units in Detroit, Michigan and Fort Huachuca, Arizona. A fellow infantryman lost a leg during the battle of France. The two men became fast friends and he talked Don into being a partner and a farmer with him in Michigan. One of the best potato farms in the state. He has enjoyed living in Arizona for over 40 years. He was his own man and good friend. He leaves behind his wife, Marie; a son, Steve and daughter, Patricia plus two stepsons, James E. Cook and Joseph E. Cook; four grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, half brother, James T. Hippel; a niece, nephew and several brother and sister-in- law. A Memorial Service will be Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave.
