Gloria Kane
Gloria Verdi Kane died in Tucson, Arizona on October 21, 2012, ending a courageous 29-year battle with cancer. She will be sorely missed by everyone lucky enough to know her. Gloria was born at home during a blizzard on December 24, 1935 in Buffalo, NY to the late Stephen and Libby Verdi. She spent all but the first few years of her childhood in Washington, DC, where she graduated from St. Gabriel's grade school and Immaculata High. She came to know her husband of 53 years while attending Georgetown University in 1954-55. A devoted wife and mother, Gloria brought love and sunshine everywhere she went. She was also an accomplished professional. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene at Columbia University in 1959. She worked many years in private practice in Cambridge, MA and Columbus, Ohio and taught in The Ohio State University School of Dentistry. She published several academic articles on preventive dentistry and served on numerous committees of the American and Ohio Dental Hygienist Associations. Retiring from dental practice in 1991, Gloria went on to become a licensed housing contractor and a skilled jewelry maker. She oversaw the rehabilitation of the Symphony Women's historic Amado House in downtown Tucson and a former convent in Newton, MA. Limited Additions and the Tucson Museum of Art have featured her line of jewelry in their shops for many years. Besides serving on the Board of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra (SASO), Gloria was an enthusiastic member of the Desert Garden Club, the Assistance League, and the Tucson Thespians. Gloria leaves behind a wide circle of friends and family. She is survived by her husband, Edward J. Kane; daughter, Laura Kane Mullahy; sons, Stephen and Ted (Christy); granddaughter, Rachel Mullahy and brother, Anthony Verdi (Peggy). Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 5150 N. Valley View Rd. Following the service, a reception will be held at Skyline Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SASO, P.O. Box 43131, Tucson, AZ 85733.
