James Eamon Byrne Obituary

James Eamon Byrne, age 91, died on June 7, 2013. He was born February 22, 1922, to Peter and Rose Byrne at Anaconda, Montana. Jim was a graduate of Georgetown University and served as a tank commander with the 3rd Army in Europe during World War II. For twenty-five years, he worked for the Anaconda Copper Company in Chile, first at the mine in Chuquicamata and later at the company's local headquarters in Santiago. He was a vice president of the Chile Exploration Company, General Business Manager of Anaconda's Chile operations, and Director of Anaconda's Chilean subsidiaries. Jim periodically brought his wife and children back to the U.S. on vacation to visit relatives and travel the country, most memorably on a cross-country trek ending at the 1964 World's Fair on Long Island, New York. After leaving Chile, Jim held senior positions managing Anaconda's Mexican mining properties, including serving as director of operations in Cananea and as a Vice President of Anaconda's General Mining division. He also served as Director of Anaconda- Iran and President of the Butte Water Company. Mr. Byrne is survived by his wife, Jane; brothers, Tom and Bernard; sister, Alice Ann; daughters, Kathy, Vanessa (Kent Edwards), Maureen (Charles Lawton); grandson, Jess Knox (Kate); and great-grandson, Edson Knox; daughters-in-law, Vicki Byrne and Gail Campbell, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his son, James Peter. Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus, an avid fly fisherman, a die-hard Notre Dame football fan and a life-long lover of the game of golf. A charming and animated storyteller, Jim preserved the legends of the Byrne and Maguire families of Anaconda, Montana and passed them on to succeeding generations in his fabulous tales. Son, brother, cousin, student, soldier, mining executive, golfer, angler, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Jim lived a long and full life. His friends and family loved him deeply and will miss him greatly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the El Rio Foundation 839 W. Congress, Tucson, AZ, 85745. A Memorial Mass will be held at Pius X, Monday, June 10, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel.
