Joseph Green Obituary

Joseph Martin Green 7/19/1925 - 10/5/2012 Joseph M. Green was born in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin to Rev. Joseph M. Green and Agnes Dahle Green, the last of six boys. He joined the Army out of high school and served in the infantry in Europe during WWII. After college at the University of Wisconsin, Madison on the G.I. Bill, he attended medical school at Northwestern University, followed by a psychiatric residency, a Child Psychiatry fellowship, and two years on the faculty of the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. In 1961, he moved with his wife, Ruth Green (deceased) and his young family to Tucson, becoming the first child psychiatrist here, practicing at Palo Verde Clinic and the Arizona Children's Home. Subsequently, he served as Medical Director for Children's Services at La Frontera Mental Health Center and then returned in 1976 to the UW Madison medical school as faculty Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Throughout his career, Joe was active in national organizations and served as state president of the Arizona and Wisconsin Psychiatric Associations. He retired in 1988 and returned to Tucson soon after. After retirement, Joe traveled widely, particularly with his children and his friend of many years, Betty Dovenbarger, of Madison, Wisconsin. He enjoyed reading, opera, nature walks, and playing bridge or cribbage with friends and family. He spent summers at the cabin his father built in Northern Wisconsin. He loved telling stories and jokes over cocktails by the lake there, or while watching the shadows on the Catalina Mountains with local and visiting friends who will particularly miss his wisdom, kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. Joe is survived by his children, Rick (Stephanie) of Pittsburgh; Karen (Alex Hobson) and Jeff (Tina) of Tucson. He will be deeply missed by them and his seven grandchildren, Emily, Julia, Eric, Timothy, Matthew, Sarah and Jacob. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 3809 E. 3rd St. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation in Joe's memory to one of his favorite charities: Planned Parenthood of Arizona, Arizona Land and Water Trust, or the Tucson Community Food Bank.
