Lillian Burke Stagg Obituary

Lillian Burke Stagg, known affectionately to her family and friends as "Lil" or "Lillybelle," passed away June 1, 2013, at age 85. She is survived by her sons, Frank of Tucson, AZ, Richard of Phoenix, AZ, and Chris of Victorville, CA; her grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Danielle, Matt, Elizabeth and James; her brothers, Charles and Joe; her sister, Martha; and many other family members and friends, who loved her dearly and will miss her deeply. Lillian was born in Giddings, Texas, on June 26, 1927, the daughter of Charles Otis Burke and Evva West Burke. Lillian's parents moved her family to Austin, Texas, where she grew up with brothers, Charles and Joe, and sisters, Martha and Joyce (deceased) and Becky (deceased). Lillian graduated from Austin High School in 1944 and from the University of Texas in 1948. She then served as a 2nd Lt. in the Women's Army Corps stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where she met James Francis Stagg, a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from Buffalo, NY. They married a year later, on November 5, 1949, in Austin; and after stops in Buffalo, NY, Orinda, CA, Ft. Eustis, VA, and Dugway Proving Ground, UT, settled in Tucson, AZ, to raise their three sons. Lillian and Jim remained married until Jim passed away on April 14, 2004. In addition to being a fulltime mom to three active boys, Lillian was a den mother in the Cub Scouts, worked tirelessly in her husband's medical office, and devoted much of her free time serving as a member of the Altar Guild at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Tucson. She was also known for never turning down any guest at her home for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, with Mexican cornbread, cinnamon rolls, root beer floats, and apple or pecan pie being her specialties. She also was an avid gardener, and loved the variety of birds that frequented her garden-like backyard and patio, including the cardinals that appeared on her patio shortly after Jim's death and in the weeks leading up to her passing. She loved music, birds, flowers, coffee, sunsets, children, anything from Texas, and God; but mostly she loved her family and her friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, had a beautiful, infectious smile, and was a caring and loyal friend to almost everyone whose path she crossed. If you knew her, you loved her. Above all, she was a kind and loving mother and grandmother who adored her sons, her grandchildren and, having never had a daughter, all of her "adopted" daughters. A Memorial Service and reception will be held Saturday, June 15, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. at St. Michael and All Angels, 602 N. Wilmot Road, Tucson, AZ 85711, where her ashes will be buried next to her husband of 54 years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any donations be made to St. Michael's or to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
