Margaret Metcalf Obituary

Margaret (Cunningham) Metcalf on February 20, 2012, Margaret left this world as she lived it, with love and grace. She was born on March 13, 1922, at home in Tucson to the late Walter and Ciara (Schroeder) Cunningham. Her father, a graduate of Purdue, founded the dairy husbandry department at the University of Arizona and was a professor in the School of Agriculture. Margaret attended Roskruge Elementary and Junior High School, she graduated from Tucson High School, class of 1939. She also graduated from the University of Arizona in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. While she was at the UofA she was President and a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, member of Phi Lamda Theta Education Honorary, President of Mortar Board, and recipient of the Freeman Medal for the outstanding woman graduate. She was also listed in "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". While attending a dance to support and entertain the troops from Davis Monthan, she met the love of her life- Captain Joseph R. Metcalf. He was a B-24 pilot with the 491st Bomb group in the Eighth Air force. He became the lead pilot for the 855th Squadron in England and completed 30 missions over Germany. He was decorated with the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Joe and Margaret were married during the war on June 25, 1943 in the Air Base Chapel in Waco, Texas. After the War they returned to Tucson so Joe could obtain his business degree from the University of Arizona. He was hired in management with Sears Roebuck & Company, and his job took them many places over the years: Los Angeles, Sacramento, Ventura and Costa Mesa. They retired in Tucson in 1979 and spent their summers at Hawley Lake and later in Pinetop/Lakeside. They had three children and five grandchildren during their 54 year marriage. While in Tucson in the 40's and 50's Margaret was a board member of the Tucson Woman's Club and the Catalina Junior Woman's Club. She was an accomplished musician and served as an organist in several Tucson churches (First United Methodist, First Christian, Christ Methodist and First Congregational). During the war she played for many service weddings and funerals. While in Sacramento she was active in PTA, Girl Scouts, YMCA and the First Methodist Church. She received the California PTA honorary membership. While they lived in Costa Mesa, she was a member and President of the Assistance League of Newport Beach and a volunteer and officer of Hoag Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. They returned to Tucson in 1979 and she was a member of Chapter E, PEO; Alpha Chi Omega Alumnae and the Assistance League of Tucson and an active member of St Paul's United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Tucson Symphony Women's Association and most enjoyed helping with the Young Artists. For over ten years she was the organist for the Hawley Lake community Church in the summers. Joe died suddenly in 1997 but she continued to live her life with grace and courage. She devoted her life to her family, friends and community and was loved by all. She moved into the Forum this past year and was blessed with many friends there. She was an avid fan of U of A basketball and loved the summers in the White Mountains. Among her favorite loves were playing bridge, listening to music and the Opera, traveling (and she visited almost all of the continents), and last but not least she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a family we feel blessed to have had her in our lives and hearts. She is survived by son, David (Pat) of Phoenix and daughter, Marcia Davenport (David) of Tucson; beloved grandchildren, Deron Davenport (Cecie), Amie Mireles (Omar), Julie Davenport, Melissa Metcalf and Jacob Metcalf; great-grandchildren, Nora Grace Davenport, Emma Margaret Mireles, Emerson Omar Mireles and Nadya Caldwell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her parents and her brother, Walter Jr. aged 10; her son, Thomas Metcalf. She was a 35 year cancer survivor. A Celebration of her life and Memorial will be held at St Paul's Methodist Church, 8501 E. Broadway Blvd., on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to The Assistance League of Tucson, or the Tucson High School Music Department.
