Martha Sumner Obituary

Martha Kathryn Sumner 11/8/1924 - 7/29/2011 She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Thomas C. Sumner. They were married 51 years at the time of his death in 1998. She was born in Shelby, NC to J. F. and Bloomie Williamson. She knew she wanted to be a nurse since she was nine years old and achieved her goal of becoming an RN. She was a cadet nurse with the Army Air Corp. She was very proud of being a nurse even till the end. She is survived by daughters, Jean Louise Wilson (Jim) and Martha "Ann" Cox (Ron); sisters, Joyce Spangler (Boyd) and Louise Elam; grandchildren, Tom Cox, William (Tamra), Mary Mortenson (Tony), Robert Cox and John Sumner Wilson and great-grandson, Hunter Peabody. Because of the loving care given to her by her grandchildren, Tom and Mary, she was able to live out her last years in her home. We would like to thank the staff of St Joseph's Hospital for the wonderful care given her (Especially Danielle and Ingrid) this last week. She loved her pastor, J. C. Joiner, and was a member of New Testament Baptist Church for 41 years. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at New Testament Baptist Church. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
