Mary Hicks

HICKS, Mary Josephine, age 94, passed away on June 11, 2011 at Kanmar Place in Tucson, AZ after a brief illness. Born in Sutter County, California in 1916 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McAnulty, she was the youngest of three children. Mary Jo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938 from the University of California at Berkeley College of Commerce majoring in economics with emphasis on accounting. She married Herold B. Hicks in 1954 and they moved to Chicago where she attended dress design academy and then Roosevelt University to earn credits in education and a teaching certificate. After teaching for several years, she was admitted to Northwestern University Graduate School and earned a Masters of Arts degree in counseling and guidance. After Herold's retirement from McGraw Hill in 1968, they moved from their home in St Louis and resided in Tucson on Roller Coaster Road for many years. Herold and Mary Jo spent a long and active retirement travelling to many places around the world. Their interests were many and varied including the environment and nature, life-long learning, business and world affairs. In Tucson, Mary Jo was actively involved with the League of Women Voters, Tucson and National Audubon Societies, and the American Association of University Women. She served on several Boards of Directors for the above organizations, served as Treasurer of the Casitas de Castilian condominium complex and worked for the University of Arizona in the Continuing Education Department as teacher and counselor for a re-entry program for older workers. In Mary Jo's words, "My life has been filled with many rewarding experiences, interesting work experiences, wonderful travels, many friends, and most of all, a wonderful husband. It has been a terrific journey." Mary Jo is survived by a stepson, Steven Hicks (Donna); granddaughters, Jennifer and Julie; three great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herold; her parents and two brothers. Arrangements entrusted to ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel (742-7901).
